The Creative Brief – Jungle Disco

This set was a fun one. The couple had traveled the world going to shows and festivals – including multiple stints in Ibiza. Their music knowledge was deep. They had a clear vision for their Tulum wedding. They wanted a “Jungle Disco”, which musically consisted of cross-generational disco classics, disco house, 90’s house, and newer tech house.

They sent me a few playlists and I was in heaven. It contained a lot of Dimitri from Paris disco edits, some Frankie Knuckles, some classics like A Taste of Honey and Jamiroquai, some stuff I’d never even heard of, some Avicii for nostalgia, and a Rick Roll for good measure.

It was a tall task to pull off in just a few weeks, but I was excited for it. Their DJ had trouble renewing their passport, so I had gotten the call no more than 3 weeks before their wedding date.

The Challenge

As a DJ, the challenge with any wedding is that you have to find a way to keep 3 generations of people from diverse backgrounds on the dance floor. This is why most people keep it classic…because the classics are classics for a reason. They unite people.

But the couple didn’t want classic, they wanted something different. Luckily, they’d already spoken with all the attendees and gotten them on board, so “Jungle Disco” wouldn’t be a surprise.

The Set

I spent a few days digging into their playlists, figuring out how I could curate it into a cohesive storyline. The tracks were all fire, but that doesn’t mean they would translate onto the dance floor.

So I broke their playlists into three separate “acts”…

Act 1 | Start with 70’s Disco

Early in the night, you gotta unite everyone, and there’s few genres that unite like disco. It’s cross-generational, playful, and easy to sign-along with. So I started there, mixing mainstream hits amongst lesser known to warm people up into what was to come. Turns out the groom’s father was a disco radio DJ in college, so it couldn’t have hit any better.

Act 2 | Escalate with disco house

The couple loved disco, but they were also huge house-heads, traveling to shows & festivals around the world – including multiple stints in Ibiza. Since I knew that’s where we needed to end, I needed a way to bridge the gap. So Act 2 was loaded with lesser known disco edits and some newer disco house to escalate things further.

Part 3 | Get weird

As we were coming down the final stretch, I asked the groom if it was time…to get weird. With his approval, we went down the house & tech house rabbit hole, and then finished with some Avicii, whose music had been a favorite of the couple in their early years.
